Karat measures gold purity, 1 karat = 1/24 gold purity. With 24 karats being pure but soft, less ideal for jewelry. Gold is alloyed for durability, like 18 karat (75% gold) for intricate pieces, and 14 karat (58.3% gold) for a balance of strength and affordability.
